The Puget Sound LYS Tour kicks off on Thursday, May 19 at 10 am at your favorite yarn shop and runs through Sunday, the 22nd. 25 yarn shops in the region cooperate to provide a fun shopping experience for fiber enthusiasts. Go gowww.lystour.com for complete information.

We are off to visit our faraway family and leaving the shop in the capable hands of Neal, Roxanne and Maggie.
So, beginning Feb 3rd and continuing through the 24th, we will be open Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays 10:00 am to 6:00 pm; Tuesdays, 11:00 to 7:00; Wednesdays, 12:00 to 8:00; and Sundays, as usual, 12:00 to 5:00.

Bad Woman Yarn knows an experienced instructor with a Thursday morning class at our shop who wishes to establish more classes -- also at Bad Woman Yarn -- on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday, either daytime or evenings.

Please contact us with your desired day, time and class type and we will pass the info along to her. She requires at least three to start a class -- perfect for your knitting group. Her rate is $17 per individual two-hour session or $60 for four sessions.

A visit to the Taliban Store

No, not that Taliban. This is a small shop hidden away on a small street in Doha crammed to the rafters with buttons, ribbons, bright fabrics and other notions. It seems to cater to tailors and other seamstresses. It is a very busy shop. While we were there for almost an hour it never lacked for several customers at a time. A few women, but primarily men purchasing materials for their projects.

The store front is not elegant but is not shy about its presence.

Just a tiny sample of all the buttons stashed all over the shop.

Bolt after bolt of bright fabrics make it hard to even get around the shop.

Ribbons, anyone?

We have a selection of buttons purchased at the shop. Come in a browse.

Visit to Old Souk

Saturday evening we visited the Old Souk in Doha. This is a collection of independent shops clustered in a warren of alleys. All the shops are probably no more than 10 by 10 feet and are stacked to the ceiling with goods. Most vendors carry a selection of similar items -- shoes, watches, men's clothing, women's clothing, kids wear, kitchen ware -- almost anything one could want. We wandered down just a couple of the alleys taking in the offerings.

The Souk overall is based around a street for pedestrians only. The street is lined with cafes and restaurants offering cuisines from around the world. We ate at a Qatari restaurant. They had a sumptuous buffet feast as the after the daily Ramadan fast. You can see it draped with tapestries and carpets.

Getting around in Doha

Getting around is a struggle for newcomers here. Many streets have no name, or if they do, the names are not posted. Traffic control is primarily via roundabouts and they become the milestones one looks for to guide them. "Drive through 3 roundabouts, go right at the next, and left at the second traffic light," is a typical driving direction one gets. Our son and daughter-in-law are beginning to navigate to the places they frequent -- work, shopping, etc.

Yesterday we found the Fruit and Vegetable Market on "Wholesale Market Street." It is full of vendors offering fresh produce from many countries. These pictures show the extent of the market and some of the products offered.

Today we will find the "Taliban Store." No relation to the faction in Afghanistan -- It has a wonderful array of buttons and notions. This according to the Ravelry Doha Knitters Group that Lee visited last Monday.

Greetings from Qatar

We arrived safely on Wednesday, the 4th. A long flight but have to give credit to non-US airlines -- they take care of their customers, even in economy class. Good and plentiful food, free movies, no checked baggage fees. The tickets are not inexpensive, but no additional charges.

We are staying with our son, John and his family. His wife, Meike, is now the Marketing Director for Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Qatar. Many US universities have branches of certain departments here in an area known as Education City. VCUQatar's School of Design is here. John and Meike are here with 4-year old Claire for a few years. We brought another granddaughter, Emma with us to experience something beyond the Pacific Northwest.

We have been helping them settle for the first week, watching Claire while the adults take care of all the logistics of beginning a new job, a new living arrangement, furnishing their home, and all that goes with it. This is a view of their villa in a 3-unit compound which, in turn, is in a larger community surrounding a lagoon that empties into the Arabian Gulf. Nearly everyone drives a Land Cruiser -- gas is about 70 cents a gallon. Electricity is very inexpensive -- provided by natural gas.

The tall buildings are part of downtown Doha, where architects are vying to each build the most unusual structure.

The calendar says that Spring is here so we have chosen some cottons as our yarns for the month. As always we offer 20% discount on our featured yarns.

Touché is a 50 - 50 cotton and model yarn blend that is wonderfully soft to the touch. It as a matte finish worsted weight with a great drape. Perfect for summer shells, cardis and wraps.

New Malabrigo Yarns have arrived

We have just received the newest yarn from Malabrigo:

Rasta.

Rasta is a single ply super bulky 100% pure merino wool yarn. It comes in 16 colors, most of which are handpainted. It knits at 2 to 2.5 stitches per inch on size 13 to 17 needles.

We also received new Silky Merino from Malabrigo as well as new stock and colors of Worsted, Sock, Chunky and Lace weights.

More New Yarns for Spring

We have added several new yarns for Spring and Summer knitting and crocheting.

Aya, a Noro yarn with Noro striping in multi colors. 50% cotton, 35% silk, 15% wool. 148 yards per skein, 5 stitches per inch on size 7 needle.

Sekku, another Noro yarn. Light fingering weight again with the Noro striping. 50% cotton, 16% silk, 17% wool, 17% nylon. 460 yards, 8 - 9 stitches per inch on size 0 - 2 needles.

Sweetness is a soft cotton blend perfect for babies and kids with lots of cute patterns. 48% cotton, 39% merino wool, 13% nylon. 136 yards, 5.5 stitches per inch on size 6 needles.

Yarns of the Month for March

The yarns for March are Inca Gold from Berroco and Classic One Fifty by Classic Elite. They both are 20% off during the month.

Inca Gold (122 yards per skein, 5 stitches per inch on size 7 needle) is a reasonably price luxurious blend of 80% merino and 20 % silk. It is a multi-plied yarn and its refined twist creates a well defined stitch pattern as illustrated in this Eastlake pattern by Norah Gaughan.

Classic One Fifty (150 yards per skein, 6 stitches per inch on a size 6 needle), sport weight yarn, is available in many colors making it great for color work as well as single color knits. It is a steal at its regular price of $6.50 and unbelievable at 20% off during March. As usual with Classic Elite yarns there is great pattern support like this shell from the Celebrating Classics book.

Helen's First Sweater

One of our favorite customers, Helen, shows off her first successful sweater at the Wednesday Evening Knit group in Wallingford Center. She knit the sweater in Berroco Vintage Wool.

New yarns this week

We are receiving new yarns and new colors of existing yarns on an almost daily basis. This week we have received:

Blackstone Tweed, from Berroco, is a wool, mohair and angora blend with great pattern support -- Sweaters, Hats, Scarves, Wraps, even a Jumper. It knits at 4-1/2 stitches per inch.

Croc-O-Dye , from Knit One, Crochet Too, a fingering weight variegated yarn in great colors. 65% Superwash Wool. 20% Nylon, 15% Silk. The accompanying Diagonal Lace Scarf pattern looks interesting.

Cotton Twirl, from Crystal Palace is a worsted weight cotton (4 - 4-1/2 stitches per inch). I am stocking only the variegated colors so far. A great kids yarn.
